Information About Hair Loss: Alopecia Review,
Male/Female Pattern Baldness Causes and Treatments

Male pattern baldnessHair loss or Alopecia is a very frequent problem, which can affect both men and women. Before detailed review of this condition, find out more about the natural hair growth cycle.

A normal person, male or female, has on their scalp 100 – 150 thousand hairs that grow approximately on an inch every eight weeks.

Knowing the process of hair growth is key factor to understanding why we lose our hair and how effectively we might be able to start growing it again.

You must know that each person loses around 100-200 hairs per day, and it is normal process.

Each and every hair goes through the natural growth cycle including the following three phases: anagen, catagen and telogen. Below is a short description of what is going on in each of these phases.

Anagen – is the stage of active hair growth, and approximately 85 percent of them is in this phase at any one time. Hair on the scalp grow about 15 cm per year and stay in anagen phase for around 2-3 years, sometimes longer – even as much as 6 years.

Catagen – is the resting stage of the hair growth cycle which occurs at the end of the anagen phase. This is a transition period that lasts for two to four weeks.

Telogen – is also called the resting stage. This phase lasts for about three months, allowing the hair to detach itself prior to falling out.

Hereditary Pattern Baldness in Men and Women

Androgenetic Alopecia (abbreviated as AGA) is the full name for hereditary hair loss, also known as female or male pattern baldness. This genetic condition is the major reason of hair loss that occurs in 95% of all cases. The other 5% include stress, medical disorders or lack of protein, vitamins and minerals in the body.

Androgenetic Alopecia affects both men and women. In this condition, the follicle becomes smaller, the anagen stage is shorter and the telogen hairs are shed faster. The hairs themselves become thinner and shorter because of the shorter growth phase. Levels of the male hormone testosterone and another hormone derived from it (dihydrotestosterone; DHT), are involved in the regulation of hair growth.

AGA is easy to detect, because it has a typical set of symptoms. First, the hairline starts to recede at the brow and temples. Then the hair becomes thinner and lighter on the crown, while the sides and back stay pretty much the same.

If you notice symptoms of Androgenetic Alopecia on the scalp surface, don’t panic. You must discuss the condition with your doctor and find the solution that will work effectively in your case.
