Stress Induced Hair Loss or Male Pattern Baldness?
Question:
My father lost his hair in his late 50’s due to stress in his job. I have always had very thick hair, when I was 20 I noticed a little thinning. I am a very anxious sort so I always looked at myself in the mirror and fiddled with my hair. The hair loss looks like male pattern baldness, but it’s in it’s early stages. In the last few months I have had really bad dandruff and an itchy scalp. I am wondering why this could be. As well I have always had very sensitive skin and finally have been smoking marijuana for the last 2 years about, almost on a daily bases.
Answer:
Though traumatic stress can cause a temporary hair loss during and around the time of the trauma, normal daily stress, including work related stress doesn’t cause hair loss. Most likely there was some other non-genetic factor that caused it, or he experienced very late onset of genetic male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia).
Likewise, daily stress and anxiety will not cause hair loss. If you’re balding pattern is following that of male pattern baldness, most likely this is what you are experiencing. Provillus and Minoxidil are the two most effective non-surgical treatments available that may successfully treat baldness and cause some hair regrowth. Neither is proven to grow hair in completely bald areas. Only hair transplant surgery is.
Regarding bad dandruff and scalp itching, you may want to consult with a dermatologist to see if this is in any way contributing to you losing your hair. He/she can also recommend various shampoos and treatments for dandruff that will help minimize or eliminate this problem.
