Hair Loss In Mass Quantities in the Front of My Scalp

Question:

I have been slowly losing my hair for 2 years. I noticed the front of my scalp started thinning first and I’ve been losing large amounts of hair. My hair was very thick and now has become very thin. You can see my bald scalp in some areas, mostly in the front. This is very frustrating since I am only 22 years old. Here is what I’ve done so far:

  1. I have had a thyroid test twice and it was normal both times. I have been healthy all of my life
  2. I’ve had a vitamin and hormone test done, all normal
  3. I once had very thick hair and did not know what to do with it
  4. I have tried many shampoos and many oils, but nothing is working.

My question is what can i do? I do not know of any homeopathic doctors and surgeons in my area. I tend to take on a lot of stress mostly due to my hair. I have always had hair on my body and legs which is very thick.

Answer:

Once piece of vital information that would help me understand your situation a little better is whether you are male or female. However, based on all the information you have provided me, I am starting to suspect that you may have traction alopecia. Traction alopecia is a hair loss related to excessive hair pulling and/or styling in certain areas of the scalp. For example, if you have long hair and usually wear it in a tight ponytail or do anything else that pulls or tugs at the hair, the follicles in the front of the scalp especially may have become damaged and caused excessive hair loss to those areas. This falls right in line with your description of excessive hair loss in the front of your scalp.

The good news is, as long as no scarring has occurred, hair loss from traction alopecia may reverse itself and the majority of it will grow back. But for this to happen, you must not continue with any action or styling technique that pulls on and damages the hair roots.

In order to confirm the cause of your hair loss, consult with a dermatologist and have them perform a full scalp biopsy and medical evaluation. Other causes of hair loss you didn’t mention above include low ferritin levels, an iron deficiency, certain medications, an autoimmune deficiency (alopecia areata), etc.

I wouldn’t put a lot of hope in any particular treatment at this point until you get properly diagnosed. If you do have traction alopecia and scarring has occurred, you may consider surgical hair restoration with a world class surgeon.
