Women's hair loss and female pattern baldness

Hair loss affects women as well, and even though it may often be less apparent than men’s, no large bald areas, it still can have a devastating psychological impact on many women.

Statistically, a woman suffers more distress from her hair loss than a man from his.

One of the most common causes of women hair loss is female pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia), which you can inherit from any of your parents.

The dihydrotestosterone hormone, a derivative of the male hormone testosterone weakens hair follicles. Much depends on how active is the conversion of testosterone into DHT in the follicles. Even without high level of testosterone, there may be enough dihydrotestosterone hormone to produce noticeable damage.

Women’s hair loss due to female pattern baldness shows itself differently on a scalp than men’s from the male pattern baldness. No recession of the hairline, and instead, there is typically a diffuse hair thinning in an oval area on top of a woman’s head.

Hairloss in the form of FPB typically shows around menopause, but can also occur much earlier, like in late twenties, and than earlier it comes, the more damage brings.

The hair loss treatment options for a woman are somewhat more limited than for a man. For example, prescription drug Propecia that helps some men, is not used for women.

Due to a more diffuse pattern of the female hair loss, a woman is less likely to be a good candidate for successful surgical hair restoration/transplantation. Yet, they often are better at covering up hairloss problems by using visual effects of hair styles.

Besides FPB, women can also experience other types of hairloss, like patchy hair loss (alopecia areata), hairloss from a disease or hormonal imbalance, as well as side effect from medications or stress.
