What is the cause of hair loss?

Nobody knows yet what causes hair loss, but everybody agrees that this is genetic. A gene can be passed on even by family problems that do not have hair loss problems – for instance, a mother who does not have alopecia can pass it on to her sons. There is no scientific evidence that this gene is inherited from the female parent rather than the male parent, or the other way around.

After a certain age, the male hormone testosterone turns into dihydrotestosterone, which makes the hair grow thinner and shorter, until it stops growing altogether. This can happen at women, too, but it’s pretty rare and usually not very severe. The alopecia caused by dihydrotestosterone cannot be cured at this time, but there are methods to slow it down, or to cover it, by using a transplant or an alternative method, such as herbal hair loss treatment.

If you notice the first symptoms of hair loss, you should consider that it may be a temporary situation, and see a doctor. While this is not a disease in itself, it may be a symptom of other underlying problems. Hair loss may be a sign of infectious diseases, nervous and stress-related disorders, or caused by toxic substances, hormonal disorders, allergies, some medication you may be taking, smoking etc. The good news is that this is usually temporary, and, once the cause is removed, the hair will grow back on.

For women, the most common causes are giving birth (during the pregnancy, the hair growth cycle is ceased, and immediately after giving birth it suddenly resumes, usually by falling off in chunks), menopause and cancer treatment, notably chemotherapy. In all these cases, the hair will grow back on in time.

Androgenetic alopecia, or female pattern baldness, is rare, but it does not indicate a severe disorder or disease, even if some women tend to believe they may be suffering from some sort of chromosomal or hormonal imbalance, this is usually not the case.

Despite some urban legends that have been around for ever, washing the hair too often does not make it fall off. It may weaken the hair if you use a low-quality product, but will not cause permanent damage. Also, brushing vigorously will neither help nor harm on the long term, hair dyes and perms do not cause permanent loss, and you won’t get alopecia by wearing hats or wigs all the time. These are all external factors, with a certain influence on how healthy and shiny your hair is, but with no permanent effects.
