Hair loss treatment drug Propecia (finasteride) is recognized as one of the most effective nonsurgical products, that was designed for men only.
The hair loss treatment action of Propecia (or its generic equivalents with finasteride) is based on the established link between the male pattern baldness and hormones. A special enzyme from the oil glands of the hair follicles can convert the male hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (a derivative of testosterone). The dihydrotestosterone hormone shrinks follicles. The shrunk hair follicles gradually die out.
How does Propecia work?
The finasteride or Propecia hair loss treatment drug get in the way of that hormonal mechanism. In particular, Propecia works by suppressing the enzyme that converts testorterone hormone to its hair-killing derivative dihydrotestosterone. The enzyme (Type II 5-alpha-reductase) from the hair follicle oil glands.
Propecia is available by prescription. Like Rogaine, Propecia requires continual life-long use, or else its hair loss treatment effects will reverse within a few of months. It does not revive dead hair follicle. So, it won’t help those men, or those scalp areas, that are already bald.
Like Rogaine, Propecia (finasteride) is among those very few drugs that are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for hair loss treatment, after extensive clinical studies in the nineties. The clinical studies showed quite low occurence of Propecia side effects. Typically, the side effects that occured were possible to reverse by stopping the Propecia therapy.
