Hair loss and nutrition

Hair loss therapies are not typically based on nutrition. There is no magic hair vitamin that could stop hair loss, as many hair growth or hair loss causes go beyond vitamins or nutrition alone. Yet, if you overlook certain healthy nutrition factors, your hair loss situation can become much worse.

There are at least two important ways of how nutrition worsens your hair loss: deficiency and excess. Some nutrition components in your diet, like certain vitamins, hurt your healthy hair growth when you have deficiency of them. While some others stimulate hair loss if taken in excess.

For example, for some people hair loss is connected to deficiency of iron. You need iron in your diet to support formation of red blood cells. Deficiency of iron leads to anemia. Anemia can bring hair loss. Deficiency of vitamin B12, which can result from a strictly vegetarian diet, and biotin (from vitamin B group) can also show in hair loss. Some support for health hair can come from another group B vitamin – vitamin B2 (riboflavin).

Hair loss can also result from an excess of vitamin A

Besides those factors, a generally healthy and balanced diet is important to maintain healthy hair growth. Hair cells, being among most rapidly growing cells in your body, need constant nutrition, including proteins, carbohydrates, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals.

To prevent hair loss, also avoid any “crash diets” for fast weight loss, especially those that make you lose more than a couple of pounds a week. A significant physical stress from such a strict diet can trigger hair loss. Besides, you hair needs calories in your diet, better not less than 1,000 calories a day.

Another connection between healthy nutrition and hair loss is the health of your blood vessels. Hair loss is observed to correlate much with heart disease risk. The same nutrition factors, like high cholesterol level, that stimulate plugs of arteries (and cause heart disease), are also likely to block blood flow to hair follicles, causing hair loss.

Finally, try to control the amount of animal fat in your diet. If your diet is high in animal fat, it can stimulate release of testosterone into your bloodstream. Testosterone transforms into dihydrotestostorone that causes hair loss.
